Muesli

A friend of mine, Lori, introduced me to muesli, a few weeks ago and I really like it as a quick, simple, healthy breakfast option. I love finding new ways to eat more oatmeal and this one has been great. Like yesterday, this one turned out to be another “un-recipe” in that there aren’t really any quantities. Honestly though, I think those types of recipes can be more fun! I love the creativity that I can put into cooking, tossing in a dash of this and a pinch of that.

Muesli

  • yogurt
  • quick cook oats
  • fruits (she recommended dried, but I think either would be good)
  • nuts (unsalted is preferred, but any will do)
  • milk

Mix 3 parts yogurt to 2 parts oats in a bowl and let it set for a minute or two. Then, stir in the fruit and nuts. Adjust thickness to personal preference by adding either milk or more oats.

There are so many ways you can switch this up to get a different taste each time. Basically, just be as creative as you would any bowl of oatmeal:

  • Try using different flavors of yogurt.
  • Vary the fruits
    • raisins
    • apricots
    • prunes
    • cherries
    • banana slices
    • blueberries
  • Vary the nuts used
  • Add chocolate chips or any other baking “chips” like: butterscotch, peanut butter, caramel, etc.

I read this “recipe” in (I think) Prevention magazine more than 10 years ago. I was immediately hooked. Unfortunately, I ate it so regularly that I got a bit tired of it after several months and needed a break. I ended up forgetting all about it. Thanks for the reminder…I’ll be a bit more sparing with it this time around. ;)
