Scrabble Mix

Are you ready for this? Ok, I want to warn you before I share this recipe with you… some of you may curse me (in a good way), because this stuff is amazingly addicting. There aren’t any special spices, so the taste is never overpowering. The simple mixture of salty and sweet make this snack mix one of those where you will find your hand unavoidably drawn to the bowl. The lightly buttered, roasted flavor gives it just enough of a distinction from simply munching on dry cereal, but still keeps it interesting. I love spicy foods, and things full of flavor, but I would choose this mix over a traditional Chex mix any day.

Every year after Christmas, my family takes a road trip together. This stuff inevitably makes an appearance, and even a large popcorn tin rarely survives until we get home. Because of the size of containers the cereal is sold in, this recipe makes a very, very large amount of snack mix. However, you could easily just half everything to make it more manageable.

This recipe is the third in a series of appetizers. For the index and links to all others in the series, check this post to make sure you see them all.

Scrabble Mix

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 box Cheerios
  • 1 box Kix
  • 1 box Captain Crunch
  • 1 box Rice Chex
  • 1 box Corn Chex
  • 1 can cashews (or other assorted nuts)
  • 1 lb. butter, melted
  • 1 bag pretzels

METHOD

1. Mix together the cereals, pretzels, and nuts in a large trash bag, and place the mixture in a large roasting pan.

2. Pour butter over top, and mix well to coat evenly. Place in oven at 200° for about 2 hours, stirring every half hour.

Remember to store the mix in sealable containers to keep it fresh.

1 lb of butter? nice! Paula Deen would be proud.
The only thing it needs is some mini-marshmallows! :D

LOL. Yeah, 1 lb. of butter is a lot, but just look at how much mix this is making… It makes a HUGE roasting pan full.

NP. :) I thought I recognized them and then I realized how perfect they’d be in there.

Yeah, the Kix and the Capn. Crunch add just enough sweetness to make it deadly with the saltiness of the pretzels and nuts. :)
