Helping Haiti

Haiti Chronic Hunger

My heart truly goes out to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. These tragedies are so difficult to imagine in and of themselves, but when they happen in countries that are already in such a state of poverty and hunger, the result is so much more catastrophic. So far, world organizations have raised millions of dollars, but to fight chronic malnutrition and famine-like conditions while the towns are in their current state, they are going to NEED A LOT MORE MONEY!

It is amazing how much of a difference that our individual small donations can make when we add them up. I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and make a contribution to any charity that is providing aid in Haiti right now. Even in our own tough economic times, every little bit that we can spare could make a big difference in someone’s life.

How can you help?

If you don’t know where to go to help out, here are a few places to get you started:

The American Red Cross – www.redcross.org

CARE – www.care.org

UNICEF – www.unicef.org

Doctors Without Borders – www.doctorswithoutborders.org

You can also make donations via text:
Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 (charged to cell phone bill) – via The American Red Cross – www.redcross.org
Text Yele to 501501 to donate $5 (charged to cell phone bill) – via Wyclef Jean’s foundation, Yele Haiti
Text HAITI to 52000 to donate $10 (charged to cell phone bill) – via The Salvation Army – www.salvationarmyusa.org

Now, I want to know the ways that everyone is chipping in to help. As an incentive:

I pledge to donate $2 for every comment left on this post (up to $200), in which you tell me what you did to help those needy people in Haiti.

That’s it. All you have to do is leave one comment telling me what you did to help the relief efforts in Haiti, and you will indirectly be making an additional $2 contribution.

My husband is a pilot for the Marine Corps and he leaves tomorrow morning to provide relief. He will be gone a month. So I guess I am helping Haiti through him. What a wonderful way to use your blog to help! :)

The college where I work is collecting donations (to go to a charity the dean supports that does work there. Not sure which one.) I’ll donate to that fund for starters.

My company actually has a charity for Haiti called the Caring House, and we build homes there all year long. They were all destroyed so yesterday at 1pm a place left with first responders and some supplies. More to come, I’m sure!

I texted in a donation and am taking a bag of my old shoes to donate through Soles 4 Souls—many people are digging through the rubble with no shoes. It’s such a tragedy.
