Honey? Yes Dear…

22 January 2010 5 Comments

Wow, I don’t know how I forgot to share this with all of you… Just before New Year’s, I went to Savannah, GA and made another pilgrimage to one of my favorite stores: The Savannah Bee Company. They have an amazing store that is dedicated to their love for all things honey.

I have always had a strange love and respect for honey. It is quite an amazing thing really. If you think about it, what other food can be used as a thoughtful term of endearment? Well, I guess there is sugar. And sweetie pie / sugar pie. Cookie. Muffin. Pumpkin. Dumpling. Turkey. OK, OK, so maybe honey isn’t all that unique in that regard, but, well, it does still have a lot of other great things going for it. If you don’t know by now, honey is one of the only foods that can last for years, even centuries, if properly sealed and stored. I have read reports of honey found in clay pots buried in ancient Egyptian tombs that was still edible. Supposedly, the preservative power of the honey is so great that they also used it for the actual embalming of the dead, prior to placing them in the tombs.

Indeed, this liquid gold has had its share of worthy praises. There are numerous references to honey spread across many different religions. Throughout some of the religious texts, honey is regarded as a symbol for the new year, is one of the elixirs of immortality, and the “Promised Land” was described as a “land flowing with milk and honey“. Those are examples of only three major religions, but the references do not stop there.

Alright, so we all know honey is this miraculous cure-all, deeply rooted in the worlds’ religions. BUT, did you know that the bees, those great insects that bring us this delectable nectar, can also provide excellent forms of transportation?

Yep, Stacey confirmed it…

So, anyway, back to The Savannah Bee Company. It really is a cool place. As we walked in, they had a honey bar, where were able to sample each of their delicious flavors of honey (with a separate spoon for each, of course). I usually try to buy my honey locally, for its supposed allergy aiding potential, but this stuff was wonderful. Yes, the shop is based out of Savannah, GA., but according to their website, their products are available throughout the U.S., as well as online ordering.

In case you are wondering, No, the Savannah Bee company did not solicit an advertisement in any way. I visited the store, loved their products, and wanted to share.
