PB Recycling

8 April 2010 9 Comments

I’ve seen around the blogging world that a lot of people like to make their oatmeal in their empty peanut butter jars so that they can scrape out every last bit along with spoonfuls of their morning oats. While I applaud that thrifty practice, I thought I would share the slightly different approach we take in our household. Our dogs LOVE it when we finish jars of peanut butter, because they get to “wash” them clean. Unfortunately, to avoid sad, jealous puppies, I have to save the jars until I have 2, so each can have one.

For those dog lovers out there… do you have a Kong? They’re great, right? Well, this is basically the same thing, except it’s free! I give them the jars with the lids screwed on (so it will take longer to get into), and it is guaranteed doggy entertainment for at least an hour. Don’t worry, they have no trouble getting their tongues down to the bottom to get every last bit of peanut butter.

By the way, the first one is MacGregor, a Border Collie, and the second is Pepper, our Black Lab.

I have done this exact same thing with my dog too! I only let her have the real peanut butter though, when it’s flavored or almond butter, it’s all mine :)

We finally gave up and just bought Ellie her own PB jar. That way we don’t have to worry about double dipping :)
I do have a Kong. Someone suggested to us that we fill it and freeze it to make it last longer.

I love it! Adorable. Our cat hasn’t taken a liking to much human food unfortunately :)

Do you ever worry that they’ll cut their tongues on the edges?

I have small dogs so peanut butter jars are not an option (unless they stick the entire head in, which would be a sticky disaster afterwards), but I did consider once giving them the little containers from sour cream. Once I felt the edge on those though, I don’t think it’s a good idea anymore. Maybe the edges of the PB jar are not as sharp?

By the way, freezing it WILL extend the fun even longer :) ))

They don’t ever cut themselves on the edges just from licking the PB. After a while though, they start chewing on the edges, and that makes it jagged. If they are still working on the PB at that point, I will sometimes take a pair of scissors and cut off the top portion. That removes the rough part they chewed on, and gives them easier access to those last few bits of PB.

Ya know, even with as many times as I have frozen the Kong with PB in it, I have never thought of putting the PB jars in the freezer. I’ll have to try it.

    I LOVE Kongs! They’re brilliant! :)

Though I rarely put PB in it, because one of my dogs doesn’t digest it that well (I’ll put it that way, to avoid further details ;) , plus she needs to lose a little weight anyway…

So I usually stuff it with bananas (and maybe stick a piece of dried liver in it), cooked sweet potatoes or regular potatoes, plain yougurt (since it gets a little leaky, I’ll either block the hole at the end with a little bit of peanut butter or mix yogurt with something like rice), sour cream, cream cheese… pretty much anything I have in my fridge :) )) (except the usual stuff dogs can’t have, obviously)

I’d really recommend sweet potatoes! They’re sweet so dogs love them, but they’re also good for them…

So there you go, some unsolicited advice :) ))

I love “oats in a jar”…. that is always the first thing I do with my near-empty peanut butter jars. However, no matter how much I scrape… there’s always juuuuust enough left over for my beagle to enjoy too. :)

I usually give my dog the empty pb container with the lid off. Good idea to keep it on!
